While the contacts themselves sync seamlessly from your Gmail account to your iPhone, there is an issue when you want to see your contacts listed by group on it. If you are expecting to see your contacts listed by group, then think again. You likely will not it as they will not sync seamlessly like they do on an Android product.
I had this problem when I tried to sync my contacts to my iPhone and my wife had it when she attempted to sync her contacts to her iPhone. We were both glad that there is a fix for this. Downloading an app called Contacts Sync for Gmail will help to fix this. If you only have a few contacts, the free version will work. Otherwise it will set you back $3.99 but if you organize your contacts by groups you will find it to be well worth it. I have many contacts and when I access my contacts by group, I realize Contacts Sync gives me a good bang for my buck. I set it up for 2-way sync so if I add or change a contact either in Gmail or on my iPad, it will sync to the other. You also need to disable any prior method that you use to sync your Google contacts whether it is by your iPhone settings, Google CardDAV account or an ActiveSync Exchange Account. Enabling Auto Sync automatically syncs your Gmail contacts between your Gmail account and your iPhone and/or iPad. Yes I know this all can be a pain but if you access your contacts by Group it is well worth it and I personally have found this to be a time saver.
While it may not be seamless, you can sync your iPhone contacts by Group with your Google Contacts.
