The Right Settings Will Go A Long Way To Enhance Your iPhone Privacy
Apple’s iOS 10 operating system is Apple’s latest operating system for its mobile products. It comes with options to guard your phone’s privacy and you should give strong thought to enabling them.  Here are 9 things you can do to better guard your iPhone or iPad privacy.

  1. Minimize your lock screen access – If you have a passcode lock on your phone (and if you don’t then add it right now) go to “Settings” then to “Touch ID & Passcode”.  Where you see “Allow Access When Locked”, disable “Siri”, “Wallet” and “Home Control” People should not be able to access these without knowing your passcode.
  2. Use a custom alpha-numeric passcode – the current iPhone passcode default is a 6-digit number. You can do better. In “Settings” go to “Touch ID and Passcode”.  From there enter your current passcode and then tap on “Passcode Options”. Then select “Custom Alphanumeric Code” A longer password is hard to crack than a shorter one. If you do not have a passcode that put one on your phone pronto! An article I wrote a while back will tell you more. Click here
  3. Don’t Blindly Join Wi-Fi Networks – Go to “Settings” then “Wi-Fi” and enable “Ask to Join Networks”. When activated you will not be able to join a network that you do not know about unless you agree to do so for that specific network. You won’t be logged into a network that you would rather not be in.  An untrusted network may be a bad network.
  4. Stop Your iPhone From Tracking You – If you connect to Wi-Fi while you’re at a location, your phone can track you.  That is unless you go to “Settings”, “Privacy”, “Location Services”, “System Services” and “Frequent Locations” and turn this option off. Clear the location history by hitting the “Clear History” button for even more privacy.
  5. Enable “Find My iPhone” – Should your phone get lost or stolen, this could enable you to locate your phone.  Go to “Settings” “iCloud”, “Find My iPhone” to enable this function. For good measure also enable “Send Last Location”. When your phone’s battery is critically low, your phone’s location will automatically be sent to Apple. Should you lose your phone, you can find out how to recover it by clicking here.
  6. Always require password with every app purchase – Do you have children? Are you concerned about your financial security? If you get prompted to require a password for purchases made from your iPhone select “Always Require” to protect yourself.
  7. Don’t Let Apps Upload Your Data – Ever wonder how Facebook suggests contacts, LinkedIn determines people you may know? Allowing your phone’s contacts to be accessed by them is one way they get this information. Go to “Settings” “Privacy” and select apps like contacts, photos, or email. Then move the slider on or off for the apps you wish to allow or not allow access to.
  8. Set up 2-factor authentication – You may consider this a pain, but it could be the difference between a hacker accessing your data or not. Having your user ID and password is not enough. When you log into an account where you have enabled 2-factor authentication, a code is sent to your phone.  You need to provide this code in addition to your user ID and password.  I wrote about this a while back and the article is helpful for you to understand this. Note that since this was written that there are some variations of this but the intent is the same. Click here for article
  9. Limit Ad Tracking – Ever wonder how ads you see appear to correspond to your own interests and preferences? Part of this is without enabling the “Limit Ad Tracking” option, you are allowing Apple to supply some of your user information for advertising purposes. To enable this option, go to “Settings”, “Privacy” and “Advertising” “Limit Ad Tracking” and enable this.

How To Prevent Facebook From Viewing Your WhatsApp Data

WhatsApp is Changing Its Privacy Policy – Opt Out Your Info Being Shared With Facebook
When my son was in South America last year, we largely communicated via WhatsApp. The clarity of the phone calls we made using it was terrific. It sounded as if he was next door as opposed to being a few thousand miles away.

You may have heard that WhatsApp which is owned by Facebook will soon start sharing your personal data with Facebook. This has yet to happen but soon phone numbers, usage and other information derived from your WhatsApp account will soon be shared with Facebook.  Facebook will now start to mine your WhatsApp account for data. That is unless you one of the 2 following things:
  • If you go into your WhatsApp “Settings” and then into “Account” there is an option at the bottom as shown in the picture below that says, “Share My Account Info” Turn the slider to the left so that this is no longer enabled.  (See picture below) Now in order to convince you to share your information, WhatsApp says that your Facebook ads and product experiences will be enhanced. To that I say, “Really?” We have all heard about how Facebook uses your personal information. So my suggestion is to not allow this.
Whatsapp, whatsapp messenger, whats app, computer skills, Computer Concierge NY LLC, computer senior, computer seniors, computer training queens, computer training queens ny
By moving the slider to the left by “Share My Account Info”, you are not allowing your personal information to be shared with Facebook.
  • The other way to not allow your personal information to be shared with Facebook is when you see WhatsApp revised terms of service (TOS) agreement.  At the bottom, where you enable WhatsApp to share your account information is a checkbox that says that you are allowing this.  Uncheck this box so that you are not allowing this.
To completely read the important updates to WhatsApp’s TOS, click on the link.  While there are some things that WhatsApp is still allowed to do, by disabling the share with Facebook, your information on WhatsApp will not be shared with Facebook. Existing users of WhatsApp have 30 days from when receiving the updated TOS to make these changes.

If you have questions about WhatsApp or another computer issue, I can be reached at (917) 572-3468 or email me at mike@computerconciergeny.com .

You Need To Let Others Know Your Passwords

Before It Is Too Late Share Your Passwords With A Loved One
Before you think that I am advocating sharing your banking, email, Facebook and other important passwords with everyone let me say that I am NOT saying that at all.  What would happen after you die and your loved ones need to access your email, banking and other important online accounts? What if you become incapacitated or start to suffer from a loss of memory? Your survivors after you die will need to put your affairs in order. Trying to obtain information without passwords can be difficult.  Note when I mention passwords I also mean other pertinent logon information such as your user name as well.

My wife and I have each other’s passwords should we need to access the other’s accounts. This includes passcodes to get onto each other’s computers, tablets and smartphones.  We also have put it in our wills that we will have access to the other’s online accounts as well.  You also should keep your contact information current for your accounts. It can save you from a big headache. In time, my sons may have this access as well but that would be a decision that would be made down the road.

You can put a list of passwords in a safe place (not so safe that you forget where) and tell a loved one where your passwords list is should they ever need it.  This certainly would include a safe deposit box provided that the person you are leaving it for has access. Just remember in both cases that should you change your passwords that you also need to change it there as well.

Should you need access to a loved one’s accounts that you do not know the password for, here is one way that may work. If you have access to their phone, they may have listed it on their account information.  A code may be sent as a text message that you need to put in to gain access to the account. Most people answer the security questions honestly when setting up their accounts although I do not advocate doing so. Click to find out why. If you are prompted to answer the security questions and know the answers then give it a go.  If the person listed an alternate email address and you know the password for that, then use that to obtain the password of the needed account. You may need to call the provider in question but note that you may be on the phone for a few hours and still may not get what you need right away.

When that time comes that we go to the next step your loved ones will have a lot to deal with besides their grief. Having access to your online accounts with the password information you provide could make that time easier for them.  They also need to have this information should you start suffering from memory loss or otherwise become incapacitated so you should start preparing this information for them now.

If you want to know more about passwords or other computer issues, email me at mike@computerconciergeny.com .

Rikki You Need To Absolutely Lose And Avoid That Number

Be Careful About Those Incoming Phone Calls
About 40 years ago Steely Dan released a song “Rikki Don’t Lose That Number”   Within the past 3 weeks I have gotten calls from clients saying they received a message on their computer along the lines of, “Your computer may be infected” and to call the number given.  This is a number Rikki and anyone else must not call and just simply lose that number. It is a scam.

Unfortunately all three called the number in question. A so called “technician” took over their computer and made matters worse after my clients spent as much as $300 to “fix” the initial problem. In 2 of the cases I was able to remove the malware (and a computer virus just like spam, adware, and spyware is another form of malware) without much of an issue.  For the 3rd person who lives in the Forest Hills section of Queens New York I needed to do a factory restore of the computer.  Unfortunately the person did not have a backup of their files and lost pictures and important files.  Just another reason I always stress the importance of backing up your files and have written about this in the past. Click here for article.  These three people did in fact have malware on their computer.  Instead of calling the number given, they should have called a reliable computer repair person to fix the problem. Hopefully you will call me. I would have done it for less than what they initially spent and that only made matters worse.

As an aside here, whether it be a bank, credit card company, computer service, etc. NEVER give out personal information on an incoming call or let someone control your computer unless you initiated the call process. It is very likely a scam and there are too many scam artists out there preying on people all too willing to give this out and many times the end result is bad news.

Would You Absolutely Really Rather Have A Desktop?

The Death of Desktop Computers Is Greatly Exaggerated
Are you one of those people who have felt that the desktop is a dinosaur and won’t go near one? Rumors about the death of the desktop have been greatly exaggerated. Per the American Consumer Satisfaction Index, tablet satisfaction by consumers went down by 6%.  Desktop satisfaction is still strong and ahead of the tablet.  See picture below:
desktop, desktop computers, desktops, computer, Computer Concierge NY LLC, technology, computer skills
Satisfaction for Desktops is Higher Than Satisfaction For Tablets Per ACSI
Now desktops are not the only reason tablets are less popular.  I recently wrote about larger smartphones putting a dent into the tablet market.  Click for article

So why are desktops still here?  A few reasons and one is that desktops and laptops are better than a tablet for producing data.  Doing photo editing, writing, spreadsheets, etc. is a lot better when using a desktop than a tablet as well as gaming.  Desktops are not dropped like tablets and even laptops.  Personally the reason I still have a desktop is because of the screen size and a larger keyboard. It comes in very handy when I write (although I could easily adapt to a laptop) or edit pictures (a desktop is much better than a laptop). For photo editing, the monitor size is a big help. Also like tablets and your smartphone as well as laptops; desktops are becoming touchscreen enabled.

Desktops are easier to upgrade and generally less expensive when compared to laptops and will generally last longer than a comparable laptop. They also are better ergonomically so if you are working at a desk, it will be more comfortable and better for your posture.  With a desktop you are giving up portability however.  Needless to say it is not easy to transport from one location to another or from room in your house to another. People are not going to take a desktop and monitor (or even an all in one) constantly from place to place.  Want to take your desktop into your family room to work on a project while watching the big game?  Fugetaboutit!

While desktops are no longer popular as they once were, they do come in handy for certain uses where you are producing data and should not be overlooked when purchasing your next computer.

Will your next computer be a desktop, laptop, tablet or smartphone?

If you want to know more about being selecting a computer or other technology issues, email me at mike@computerconciergeny.com .

Tom Brady's Phone. Why You Should Be Concerned

Tom Brady's Four Game Suspension Was Overturned By Judge Richard Berman
For those who follow football, you are no doubt familiar with the court case involving the New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady who is appealing his four game suspension by the NFL regarding his alleged participation in Deflategate that Judge Berman overturned. Disclosure: I am a New York Jets fan but this is not a post in any way related to the Jets-Patriots rivalry.

Whether you agree with Commissioner Roger Goodell’s suspension of Tom Brady or Judge Berman’s ruling overturning the suspension, a big issue involved in the decision was Tom Brady destroying his cellphone and not turning it over to those from the NFL investigating Deflategate. Many companies have what is called Bring Your Own Device (BYOD). Rather than using company issued technology be it a phone, computer or tablet; the employee is allowed to have specific company access and information on their personal device. Many of these companies require the employee participating in a BYOD setup to sign an agreement.  Many of these agreements allow for the company to take possession of an employee’s personal devices if certain circumstances are met.

What is happening in today’s world is that there is a meshing of business and personal data on devices. What rights does an employer have to your personal computer, tablet and/or phone? Disclosure:  I am not an attorney and am not qualified to provide legal advice.  If you have a legal issue regarding this, you should consult a qualified attorney. The issue with Tom Brady destroying his cellphone is that NFL investigators had wanted it in order to review alleged text messages that Brady wanted the footballs inflated to a less than standard pounds per square inch (psi). But was Brady required to turn over his personal cell phone? That is the issue here.  Since the NFL claims that Brady was texting about what in affect was NFL business that they have a right to his personal phone. This is regardless of any BYOD policy since Brady from what we know did not have company (New England Patriots) data or apps on his phone.  The texts may have indicated that he did NFL business on his phone.  Now there is a bit of an exaggeration by the NFL.  By destroying his cell phone, Tom Brady’s record of text messages is not gone forever. They likely were and still are stored on the servers of his phone provider.  A court order would make these records available.  That said, I am not aware that Tom Brady is or has been under a criminal or civil investigation.  From what I understand, being under a civil or criminal investigation would very well change things as it should.

Regardless the lines between personal and business are becoming more and more blurred.  This extends to our personal communication devices and if certain circumstances are met you may have to provide these devices to your employer even though it personally belongs to you even if you are not charged criminally or civilly.  Taking a look at this objectively and not one who is anti or pro Patriots and Brady what are your thoughts? In the absence of a criminal or civil investigation, or a BYOD agreement does your employer have a right to your personal phone or other technology?

If you like this post, please feel free to share it via Facebook, Twitter or other social media site.

How To Lower the Cost Of Wi-Fi When You Fly?

With The right Strategy You Can Lower Your Wi-Fi Costs When You Fly
When you fly whether for that vacation trip you have long awaited for or a trip to take care of business do you find that you need to use the internet? If you purchase the in-flight internet service of the airline it is likely to work at a snail’s pace but you likely will have to shell out a few bucks to access the internet while flying to your destination. That is because the airlines have found yet another revenue stream beyond the cost of an airline ticket. Yes I know that JetBlue Wi-Fi is free but that is just for the basic service.

The cost to access the internet while flying can vary by such factors as the airline, when you fly, where you fly.  If the airlines uses Go-Go (they currently serve 70% of flights having passenger internet access) for their Wi-Fi, Monday and Thursday are the most expensive days and Saturday the least expensive if the flight you are taking is coast to coast or close to it.  The costs are based upon where demand is the highest and lowest.  It is similar to how tickets to a baseball game is priced today. If your team is playing on a weekend and they are playing the New York Yankees expect to pay top dollar for the ticket.  The same seat sold during the week and your team is playing the Miami Marlins (sorry Marlins fans) will cost less.

So how could you cut down on your Wi-Fi costs when flying? For starters the rates vary by airline. As I mentioned Jet Blue offers free Wi-Fi on their flights. That however is for basic service.  Their enhanced service allowing for such things as transferring large files and downloading audio and video is available at a cost of $9 hourly. If you just want to check email and browse the internet, their free service will do just fine.  Secondly you can fly Saturdays if your schedule permits. Another option is to purchase your Wi-Fi before boarding. When Gogo supplies the Wi-Fi, you can buy a daily pass from them for $16. A monthly will set you back $50 but that is limited to one airline. For $10 more per month, you can use all airlines that Gogo serves. If you need that access for business then you or your employer can deduct it for tax purposes. One of my clients in Forest Hills, Queens who flies regularly does just that.  She purchases a monthly pass.  Last but not least is to simply avoid buying Wi-Fi.  I personally have yet to purchase internet service when flying and fortunately have been able to disengage while flying.

A New Day For Buying Cellphones.  What Are Your Thoughts?

The line at a Queens NY Verizon Wireless Store Waiting to Purchase the iPhone 6 Last Year
With Verizon Wireless only offering a wireless data plan (texting and minutes will be unlimited), phone subsidies and phone contracts will soon become a thing of the past. Effective August 13, you will be able to purchase your phone by a one-time payment for it or paying for it under the installment plan.  On the surface, it seems not much will change but going forward, a lot can and likely will change.

For starters, sales of tablets have been down.  Partially this is due to people who already have a tablet such as an iPad are not yet ready to replace them as they are a newer product.  With larger smartphones such as the iPhone 6 Plus and Samsung Galaxy Note 4, people are using them as both a smartphone and tablet.  These have been called a Phablet which I wrote about this a while back. Smartphone As Tablets. What Do You Think?  I believe the trend of smartphones replacing tablets will continue as we will now pay full price for a phone.

Currently buying an iPhone 6 outright costs about $649 for the basic 16GB storage. Will this drive people away from it and cause them to look for something else? Will more cheap phones be sold?  Will the price of unsubsidized phones fall? If so then how much?  It goes back many years ago, but I can remember buying my own phone about 35 years ago.  It was a basic touch tone phone and I spent about $70 for it. That phone today with a built in answering machine, speaker and other features that my phone did not have would go for a quite a bit less.  I think I got it at a dedicated phone store as well. The model has changed.  Will Verizon, AT&T one day no longer sell cellphones? Some of you may remember being able to choose your long distance company and how things changed after the breakup of the Baby Bells years ago.

How will wearable technology be affected? I mentioned that smartphones are taking the place of tablets. Will people use that smartwatch be used as a phone when you’re out and a phablet used at home?

One other thing that has not been mentioned here. There have been rumors that Apple is looking to become a cell phone carrier.  Google with its Project Fi already has become one.

So what are your thoughts about the no contracts pricing of cell phone providers?  The way you buy cellphones will forever change. I feel that the less frills phone prices will drop. Those phones with more frills (whatever the future brings) will be the big revenue generators. People will be less likely to change phones as well.  I also feel that Android phones will have better security as well. What do you think will happen in the long term?  Your thoughts are most welcomed.

How To Use the Internet Safely When Travelling

Be Careful When Accessing The Internet While On Vacation
The end of the school year brings on another peak travel season. People bringing their smartphones, tablets, etc with them while they travel to new and sometimes familiar destinations. Accessing the internet while you are away brings upon security concerns and challenges.  There are ways to minimize the danger of someone obtaining your passwords and other personal information while enjoying your trip.

When you are in a hotel, coffee shop, restaurant, etc make sure that you are using the wireless network provided by the establishment. A hacker can set up a fake network for which you do not need to log into and see what sites you go into as well as seeing your keystrokes. Better yet, use a VPN such as vyprvpn, PVanish among others to shield your activity from onlookers that you do not wish to share your information with. When surfing the internet and especially when entering sensitive information, make sure that the website starts with “https”. If not, others can see which web pages you visit as well as what you type on them. When entering sensitive information absolutely make sure that “https” shows in the web address before you enter the information.

I also will suggest you disable automatic Wi-Fi connections. Before connecting to a wireless network, make sure that this it is a wireless network that you can trust.

If you use a hotel computer make sure that you log out of your accounts before leaving. Should you forget, the person using the computer after you do has access to the accounts you failed to log out of. Note some hotel computers will log you out automatically after a set amount of time. Regardless, do not save passwords on the computer if you are prompted to do so. Unselect the “yes” default where applicable to save passwords. What I always do when leaving a public computer is to clear browsing data.  This includes browsing history, cookies and autofill form data.  It is another layer of security. Again some hotel computers will automatically do this when you log out of your session.

When you use your phone or tablet’s 3G or 4G network the data is sent over your mobile data connection. This data usage goes against your data allowance but you are safer when doing so. You can tether your laptop to your mobile data connection but again this data usage will go against your data allowance.

Following these tips will help you to stay safe while surfing the internet while on vacation. One last thing: Don’t do banking, credit card or other financial transactions. Save it for your mobile data network if you need to do so while you are away.

Google Unsend – When You Absolutely Don’t Want It To Get There

You Didn't Mean To Send That Message And You May Have A Second Chance Not To

Ever send an email that you wish you didn’t?  After six years being in Google Labs, Google has graduated their unsend feature from Google Labs to an official setting in Gmail. If you believe in second chances this is a feature Gmail users want to enable.

This is a very easy feature to set up if you have not already.  Go to “Settings” which is in the gear icon (it looks like a bicycle spoke) and select settings. It is in the “General” tab and you will see “Undo Send:” In the box next to “Enable Undo Send” check it to enable this feature.  You can choose how long you can cancel the email after sending it.  Your choices are 5, 10, 20, or 30 seconds.  My suggestion is to select 20 or 30 seconds.  Rather than sending that email that you need to send a follow-up apology for, simply unsend the message by selecting “Cancel” which is in the top middle of the page within the time you have selected. Your message will not be sent.  Keep in mind that when you have this feature enabled, the sending of the email is delayed by the time you select so you can cancel sending it. All of us myself included have sent an email that we wish we didn’t.  This unsend feature which is now an official mainstream setting in Gmail should have been mainstream long ago.  I am glad Google finally did.

Note that if you had this feature enabled in “Labs” you will still have it enabled. One thing to keep in mind is that this is not yet available in the mobile version of Gmail but Google expects to roll it out as a mobile feature in the near future.  I guess that is why when many of us send an email from our phone or tablet we have the email signature, “Sent from my mobile. Please excuse any errors.”

This Is An Awesome And Great Gadget To Have With You

If your phone battery is low, this could be a lifesaver.
Ever find that you are either not near a place to charge your mobile phone; without either a car charger or plug to charge your mobile phone; or both?  Well a few months ago my son got me a portable charger that plugs into my phone and charges the battery phone when it is low.  Now before I go any further let me add that I have not received any payment or promise of any payment for mentioning this product.

The product is a portable external battery charger by Anker that easily fits in my pocket. When my battery phone gets low, I simply connect it to my phone, turn it on and start charging it.  I have recently started to have clients in Manhattan and have had occasion where the battery has gotten low. It is better than asking to borrow an outlet and accidently leaving my phone charging when I leave. When I am in transit whether walking, on the subway or otherwise, I plug my phone into the charger and it starts to charge my phone.  When I get home, I recharge my charger by plugging it into my computer’s USB drive and it gets recharged for another use.  As you can see in the link (Click here) they will not break the bank.  I can think of times in the past when I wish I had a product like this.

I will suggest that you test it before going it with it in the unlikely chance that you have a defective product.  You don’t want to be up the creek without a paddle when you really need it.  Also a reminder to have it charged up before you go out with it. I have a friend who went out with it not charged and his phone was dead and he could have used it.

The Good Ship Lollipop - Should You Worry?

Android 5.0 Is Being Rolled Out To Various Android Users
A while back I wrote about my experience with Android 5.0 Click to see original post.  It was not the end of the story however. While the phone was better after the original factory restore, the battery life was still an issue.  I was able to get a replacement phone from Verizon which had the previous Android operating system.  In time, I was getting notices on my phone to upgrade to the new Android 5.0 operating system (AKA Lollipop). Then I got the notice that would stay there until I upgraded my phone.  I accidently upgraded it to Lollipop and my problems while not as bad as my original update started again. For one, the battery was losing power a lot quicker. I was advised to go to my local Best Buy store and speak with the person at the Samsung Experience that is there. I did that and he reinstalled Android 5.0 (when I was there they did not have a more recent version of Android’s operating system).  I still had the issue with battery life and he suggested I call Verizon telling them that I did a restore to my phone and I would get another phone.  I did that afterwards and got another phone from Verizon. Well, the battery issue is still there and sometimes my camera requires me cleaning the cache from it and rebooting for it to work.  In other words, I am still worse off than when I had the old operating system.

What I have been told is that the issue is with Google.  They rolled out Lollipop to the manufacturers and then the manufacturers roll it out to the phone providers. There is a newer version of the Android system (5.0.1) but it has not been rolled out to Verizon from what I understand. This is a disadvantage of having an Android phone as opposed to an iPhone and has me thinking that my next phone may be an iPhone.  Click to read advantages of iPhone and Android phone.  When I get the “mm-qcamera-daemon” bug on my phone which affects the camera and drains my battery even more, I am told the only way to get rid of it is to clear the cache in my phone and reboot it. This however is not a permanent solution as this bug will pop up on my phone from time to time.

This is the first time I have ever had an issue when I have upgraded the operating system on my phone. Two of the reasons I have gotten Android phones (unable to customize keyboard and lack of external storage on the iPhone) seem to have gotten resolved in the iPhone’s favor.  You can customize your iPhone keyboard and the Samsung Galaxy S6 does not have external storage.  A lot can change when I get my next phone but I will take a closer look at the iPhone next time.
