The soon to be released Samsung Galaxy S6 comes with either 32GB, 64GB or 128GB of storage. This is internal memory with no external memory. Like all internal memory, not all of it is available for your use. The operating system may take up as more as 4GB of that memory. For my Samsung Galaxy phone, applications take up almost 6GB of memory. Miscellaneous files take up 5.58 GB of memory. Fortunately I have an external memory card that is 32GB. An Apple iPhone or iPad with 16GB of memory has about 12GB available for apps, downloads, music, videos, etc. In today’s world 12GB is not much.
Knowing that there is no room to expand your memory, getting it right when you purchase your phone or tablet without external memory is important as you will not be able to upgrade your memory later on. While the cost of extra memory is likely to be overpriced, you likely should spring for it anyway.
If you are squeezed for space and not ready to get that new phone or tablet, here is what you can do to free up space:
Some apps can take up as much as 500mb if not more. Go through your apps and see if there are any you no longer use or if you have 2 or more apps that duplicate what the other does. Remove those apps you no longer use. The second thing to do is do go through your videos and pictures. Videos can eat up your storage space quicker than you realize. Can any of them be uploaded to the cloud? Videos can be uploaded to YouTube and then deleted off your phone. That way, you are freeing up space while being able to access it off the internet. There are numerous sites for storing photos such as Dropbox and Flickr. Do you have music on your device? Get rid of those songs you no longer play? If you have an iPhone or iPad, you don’t have to sync every song. You also can change the songs you want to have on your device.
Unless you are absolutely, positively sure that you will not ever need the extra storage for your device, it is better to spring for the extra storage. The extra you are spending usually starts at $100 but you will be thankful that you bought it. Remember without buying a new device, you are stuck with that amount of memory.
