If you took your laptop along on your trip, you should be uploading the pictures daily or every other day if every day is not possible to your computer. Should a memory card go, at least the pictures that you have already uploaded to your computer are not lost since you backed them up there.
Don’t have your laptop? No problem. There are other ways. Do you bring an iPhone, iPad or Android smartphone? Subject to the amount of storage available, you can back up your pictures to it. I have a Samsung Galaxy Phone and when I am on vacation, I back up pictures from my camera to it daily. I use a memory card reader that I put the memory card into. I connect that into an adapter that on the other end connects into my phone. I then upload the pictures I took that day into my phone so in the event I have a failure with my memory card, all is not lost. If you have an iPhone or iPad, you can purchase an adapter at the Apple Store or another store.
If you are not backing up your pictures, then I will suggest that you take 3 or 4 memory cards with you on your vacation. Rotate them daily. In the event one of them fails, you still have pictures from your trip on the other cards. Memory cards are not expensive and rotating 3 or 4 memory cards is a small price to pay for the price of aggravation you will have should all your pictures be lost.
If you use your phone for taking pictures, you can upload them to Instagram. Keep in mind that currently you can only upload one picture at a time to Instagram. I do not know of a way to download a picture from Instagram however. This is used more to store and show your pictures and I would not use it to back up pictures.
Online backup is another option. Keep in mind that sites like Dropbox, One Drive, and iCloud have limits to free storage. The new Google Photos offers unlimited storage for high quality pictures that are a reduced resolution than originally taken at. Otherwise you are limited to 15GB of storage.
Once you are done with your trip and have uploaded them to your computer, you are not out of the woods yet. Make sure that they are backed up from your computer. You don’t want to take precautions while on vacation and not take precautions when you return and upload your pictures and have potentially a bigger problem losing more than those valuable pictures. No excuses. As someone once said, ”An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”
