There are advantages to both and what works for one person does not necessarily work for another. As I like to say, “It is not one size fits all but what size fits you.” Without further ado, here are what I consider to be the key advantages of each.
Samsung Galaxy S5 Features and Advantages:
1. External memory – when you buy an iPhone, you have to anticipate how much memory you need now and going forward as Apple has only internal memory which is available in 16GB, 64GB or 128GB. You can’t add to what you get but with the Samsung Galaxy S5 there is a slot for an expandable micro SD memory card.
2. Slightly larger screen. Depending on your point of view, this also can be a disadvantage.
3. The battery is removable and the battery life rated better than the iPhone 6.
4. Ultra power saving mode which makes your phone a dumb phone but you can get a few extra hours of life if your battery is real low.
5. Water and dust resistant. If you have spilled water or gotten your phone wet you may appreciate this. The Galaxy is rated as being water resistant to 1 meter.
6. If you are into selfies, the front camera has more megapixels 2mp vs 1.2mp.
7. Better for using Google calendar. You may have a problem with an iPhone in using Google Calendar. (To be covered in a future post)
8. If you have your Google contacts categorized by Group the syncing is seamless. You likely will have problems with an iPhone.(To be covered in a future post)
iPhone 6 Features and Advantages:
1. Familiar interface one iPhone or iPad to another. The manufacture can customize the interface to some degree of an Android phone. This could also be a disadvantage.
2. Even while locked you can get to the flashlight, camera, and calculator. The Samsung Galaxy S5 allows to you to only access the camera without putting in the password to unlock it.
3. Slightly lighter and smaller than Galaxy S5. The smaller screen may be a disadvantage to some as I noted above.
4. 1 more microphone resulting in better sound quality.
5. Camera has better exposure and colors with less noise making it a better camera than the Samsung Galaxy S5.
6. When Apple upgrades their operating system you can upgrade. When iOS 8 was released, I was able to update my iPad which is almost two years old. Not true for Androids.
7. Panera has an app for iPhone 6 but not one for Android phones including Galaxy S5 at the current time. OK this is a personal issue I have with Panera but I am jealous of those who order from Panera on their iPhone. Having said that, app developers still tend to develop apps for Apple products before they develop a corresponding app for Android products. This of course is an advantage the iPhone 6 has over the S5.
Both phones charge relatively quickly with the chargers included with the phone. The Galaxy S5 went from 38% to 92% in a little more than an hour vs 38% to 71% in about 45 minutes. Before Apple upgraded to the iOS 8 operating system, you had one choice of a keyboard that being the standard Apple keyboard that came with your phone. Apple now allows you a choice of keyboards such as Swype, Fleksy and my favorite SwiftKey. After I upgraded my iPad (yes I do own an iPad) to the iOS 8 operating system, the first thing I did was add the SwiftKey app and I now use that keyboard on my iPad. As far as which screen is better the iPhone 6 or Samsung Galaxy S5, this is a call that could go either way, the results are so close. See CNET test.
In all which phone to choose is a matter of personal preference. We have had: tastes great/less filling, PC/Mac, Mets/Yankees, Bayside / Forest Hills (for us locals) and we can add iPhone 6 / Samsung Galaxy S5 to these discussions. Given the improvements in the Apple iPhone 6 such as more choices in selecting a keyboard, this is the closest I came to changing over to an iPhone. The next time will it be an iPhone, Android or another phone?
So which phone works for you? The iPhone 6 or Samsung Galaxy S5. And why does that phone work better for you?
