Google Maps allows you to get directions and see points of interest even without an internet connection. However, you need to plan ahead and download a map of the area that you will be in before you get there.
So now you are wondering how do you download a map to use offline?
First open the Google Maps app on your phone. You need to have an internet connection, have a Google account and be signed into it prior to downloading the map for offline use.
Looking at Picture 1 to the left, type the name of the desired place where indicated marked “A”. I have chosen to use Santiago for illustration purposes. When a map of your selected area appears, tap the name of the place as shown marked “B” at the bottom of the map.
As shown in Picture 2 to the left, tap “Download” as shown where “C” is shown.
A framed area will show as in picture #3 shown to the left. This is the primary area of what you selected. The download will proceed when you tap “Download” located on the lower right of your screen Marked “D”
Now when you are in an area in which you are unable to access the internet but downloaded a map for use offline, all is not lost. While you can only get directions for driving to get from 1 place to another, you can at least type in a landmark location or an address. We found this valuable in Santiago. For the places we walked to, we could see where we were and where we wanted to go to. The auto directions largely sufficed.
These downloaded maps will eventually expire so you want to keep that in mind. This is because Google is constantly updating them for accuracy.
When you are using Google Maps offline, a small icon similar to a lightning bolt will appear in the lower left hand portion of your screen indicating that you are using Google Maps offline.
One last thing here: Andrea and I were at the Museo de Arte Contemporaneo in Santiago and from there we wanted to go to the Singular Hotel for dinner. While the car route was not straight-forward, we could ascertain by looking at the map offline the best walking route there to a great dinner. This was despite one turn that was not the easiest to find. It was worth it because the food there was very good and I would highly recommend it for anyone visiting Santiago.
